In recent years, provinces like Shandong and Hebei in China have strengthened regulations on natural stone resource extraction, shutting down many small-scale quarries. As a result, the reduction in supply has led to a noticeable increase in granite raw material prices, which directly impacts the overall cost of granite surface plates.
To promote sustainable and environmentally friendly mining practices, local governments have implemented stricter policies. These include limiting new quarry developments, reducing the number of active mining sites, and encouraging large-scale, green mining enterprises. New granite quarries must now meet green mining standards, and existing operations were required to upgrade to meet these environmental standards by the end of 2020.
Furthermore, there is now a dual-control mechanism in place, governing both the available reserves and the production capacity of granite mining sites. Mining permits are only issued if the planned output aligns with long-term resource availability. Small-scale quarries producing less than 100,000 tons per year, or those with fewer than two years of extractable reserves, are being systematically phased out.
As a result of these policy changes and the limited availability of raw materials, the price of granite used for industrial precision platforms has gradually increased. Although this rise has been moderate, it reflects a broader shift toward more sustainable production and tighter supply conditions in the natural stone industry.
These developments mean that while granite surface plates remain a preferred solution for precision measurement and engineering tasks, customers may notice pricing adjustments linked to upstream regulatory and environmental efforts in granite sourcing regions.
