When many procurement engineers first encounter precision granite components, they wonder: granite is hard and brittle, so can it be processed with special shapes such as grooving and drilling. There is a common perception that stone can only be made into flat reference plates and hardly machined with complex holes and grooves. In fact, modern ultra-precision processing technology has changed this view. ZHHIMG can perform high-precision grooving, drilling, counterboring, threaded bottom holes, T-slots and other structural processing on granite blanks. This enables granite components to go beyond simple flat plates and be directly assembled as integrated structural parts into various precision equipment.
Granite features high hardness and brittleness. Ordinary stone factories can only carry out simple cutting. Once grooving or drilling is performed, chipping, hidden cracks, tilted hole walls and out-of-straightness grooves tend to occur. These tiny defects will directly amplify vibration and positioning errors in ultra-precision equipment. That is why many manufacturers only sell plain granite surface plates and avoid complex structural machining. To reliably produce qualified grooves and holes on granite, it is necessary to select dense and stable black granite raw materials, and match special processing techniques, stable production environments and rich practical experience.
For drilling operations, ZHHIMG can fabricate through holes, blind holes, counter-sunk holes, stepped holes and other types. The positional tolerance and aperture tolerance of holes can be controlled within the micron range. The inner hole walls are smooth without chipping, free of invisible internal microcracks. After machining, multiple inspection procedures are conducted to verify hole geometry and wall quality, ensuring close fit for pins, screws and positioning shafts during assembly without assembly stress caused by hole deviation.
In terms of grooving, precision T-slots are the most common. Straight positioning grooves, weight-reducing grooves and air-bearing flow grooves are also available. The straightness of grooves, parallelism of groove width and flatness of groove bottoms all meet assembly requirements of precision equipment. Special edge treatment eliminates chipping. Such grooved granite bases are widely used to mount linear guides, linear motor modules and fixtures. They replace traditional cast iron beds, retain granite’s advantages of vibration damping and low thermal deformation, remove extra adapter plates and simplify the overall machine structure.
Grooving and drilling are far more than simple stone cutting. The whole process must balance material properties and precision control. Machining is completed in a constant-temperature, vibration-isolated workshop, using large CNC stone processing equipment together with special tools and cutting parameters for granite. Feed rates are controlled to reduce impact and prevent micro-damage to the material. After production, laser interferometers and high-precision micrometers are used to fully verify dimensional and geometric tolerances of holes and grooves, ensuring finished parts comply with international precision standards including DIN and ASME.
Granite components with machined holes and grooves have a wide range of applications. Integrated granite parts with holes and grooves are widely adopted in semiconductor inspection bases, CMM frames, linear motor XY stages, laser equipment beds and reference parts for PCB drilling machines. Compared with cast iron bases, structured granite parts deliver less thermal deformation, superior vibration damping and better long-term precision retention. Compared with assembled components, one-piece machining reduces cumulative assembly errors and achieves higher stability during high-speed machine operation.
Precision granite can fully support special-shape machining such as grooving and drilling. However, this capability comes with high technical barriers, and not all granite manufacturers can stably produce qualified workpieces. With mature ultra-precision stone processing technology, constant-temperature production environment and complete inspection system, ZHHIMG can customize granite components with various holes and grooves, providing integrated granite structural solutions for ultra-precision equipment.
