Granite Air Bearings for Ultra-Precision Motion: Applications in CMM, XY Tables and Semiconductor Inspection

Why Air Bearing Systems Live or Die by Their Guideway Material

A granite air bearing floats a moving carriage on a film of pressurized air just 3–15 µm thick. There is no metal-to-metal contact, no lubricant, no stick-slip, and no wear particle generation — which is exactly why air bearing stages dominate ultra-precision motion in coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), semiconductor inspection equipment, laser systems and laboratory automation.

But the bearing is only half of the system. The other half — the granite air flotation component itself: the base, the guideway rails, the beam, the XY table structure — determines how straight, how stable and how repeatable that micron-thin air film can actually be. An air bearing stage built on a mediocre substrate can never outperform its guideway.

In this article we look at why granite is the ideal air bearing granite base material, where these systems are used, and what ZHHIMG® brings to customers who need a custom granite air bearing assembly.

Why Granite Is the Ideal Material for Air Bearing Guideways

  • Fine, homogeneous grain structure. ZHHIMG® machine-grade black granite has a density of approximately 3100 kg/m³ with a fine, uniform crystal structure. It can be lapped to flatness at the micron level over meter-scale surfaces — and long-wavelength flatness is precisely what governs air gap uniformity.
  • Low thermal expansion (approx. 5–8 µm/m·°C). The air gap is only a few microns. A substrate that breathes with temperature will modulate film thickness and preload. Granite’s dimensional stability across shop-to-lab temperature excursions protects the calibrated geometry of the guideway.
  • No corrosion, no oil, no outgassing. Granite needs no protective coatings that could flake into the air film, and no lubricants that could migrate into cleanroom air. This makes granite air bearings naturally compatible with Class 100–10000 cleanroom environments used in wafer inspection.
  • High damping. Granite’s internal damping is several times that of steel, quickly dissipating vibration from floor, drives and payload dynamics — critical for nanometer-level measurement stability.
  • Rust-free for decades. Guideway geometry calibrated at the factory remains valid years later; there is no corrosion layer to degrade surface finish in the bearing zone.

Where Granite Air Bearing Systems Are Used

Semiconductor inspection & wafer metrology Granite base + guideway + datum surfaces inside cleanroom tools Cleanliness, thermal stability, vibration-free imaging
Precision XY tables / air bearing stages L-shaped or twin-rail granite bases, granite carriage plates Orthogonality, flatness of mating rails, planar runout
Laser processing & scanning systems Granite beam and base absorbing drive vibration Beam pointing stability, spot placement repeatability
AOI & industrial CT Granite structural frame with air flotation moving axes Position repeatability, drift-free image stacking
Battery & electronics inspection Granite air bearing platforms for high-speed scanning Acceleration capability without excitation of resonances

Customer Pain Points — and How a Properly Engineered Granite Base Answers Them

  • Vibration. Floor vibration, linear motor cogging and air bearing squeeze-film dynamics all couple into the measurement loop. Granite’s high damping plus correct mass and three-point (or kinematic) support design suppress them.
  • Thermal deformation. Gradients of only 0.5°C across a meter of steel bend it by microns. Granite’s low expansion coefficient and low thermal conductivity slow and flatten thermal transients.
  • Precision drift. Cast metals carry foundry stress histories that relax over years. Granite has no stress history to release; geometry lapped at the factory stays calibrated.
  • Unstable assembly datum. Threaded inserts and mounting pads lapped coplanar with the guideway surface give the air bearing manufacturer one unambiguous datum — instead of chasing tolerance stacks across machined metal parts.
  • Cleanroom requirements. No coatings, no lubricant, no rust: granite guideways stay clean, and ZHHIMG® performs final assembly in dust-controlled, constant temperature and humidity workshops.

Design Inputs to Confirm Before Ordering

To engineer a granite air bearing component correctly, we recommend confirming with your team and your bearing supplier:

  1. Travel range, payload and center of gravity (including moving cable chains).
  2. Air supply: available pressure, dew point, filtration class at the machine.
  3. Guideway layout: single rail, twin rail or L-shape; required straightness and flatness over full travel.
  4. Datum responsibility: who laps the mating surface, who guarantees parallelism between opposed rails.
  5. Environment: temperature range, gradients, cleanroom class, floor vibration spectrum.
  6. Interfaces: insert locations, loads and torques, mounting to frame, metrology frame or feedback scale mounting.
  7. Documentation: which tolerances must appear on the inspection report, with which traceability.

Send Drawing for Quotation

ZHHIMG® manufactures custom granite air bearing bases, guideways, beams and XY table structures to customer drawings, complete with traceable inspection reports. Three ways to start:

  • Send drawing for quotation: share your STEP or PDF drawing with travel, payload and accuracy targets — we reply with a manufacturability review and quotation within a few working days.
  • Request technical datasheet: ask for granite material data, tolerance capability tables and typical assembly interfaces.
  • Book a video audit: walk through our constant-temperature workshop and metrology lab remotely, live.
