Both stones look dark and stately when polished. Under the surface, their engineering behavior is in different leagues:

What do the numbers mean in practice? A granite machine bed made from true precision granite keeps its flatness through years of load, cleaning agents and thermal cycling. A marble base of the same shape will drift – and it will do so invisibly, because nothing about it looks wrong from the outside. On a surface plate that is supposed to be the reference for everything you measure, that drift corrupts every number taken on top of it.

Four On-Site Tests a First-Time Buyer Can Actually Use
You do not need a laboratory to catch a marble substitute. These four checks work in a warehouse or at a trade show:
- The scratch test. Draw a steel key or knife across a hidden edge. True granite (quartz-rich, Mohs 6-7) resists – you will see a faint metal mark, not a groove. Marble (calcite, Mohs 3-4) scratches with a visible white groove. This single test eliminates most substitutes.
- The acid drop test. Place one drop of dilute acid (even lemon juice works slowly) on a hidden spot. Marble fizzes – calcite reacts visibly with acid. Precision granite shows no reaction. Wipe off promptly on a finished surface and test only on an edge you can sacrifice.
- The water test. Put a few drops of water on a raw, unpolished surface. Marble darkens as it absorbs within minutes. Precision granite with under 0.1% absorption stays unchanged.
- The paper check – demand the test report. This is the most important test of all. Ask the supplier for a material test report stating density, water absorption and compressive strength, and check that the density is in the true precision granite range – for ZHHIMG® black granite, about 3,100 kg/m³, and we supply the test report with the material certification.
