Granite bases are high-value ultra-precision components. Long-distance overseas sea freight involves multiple hoisting, transshipment, bumping, and fluctuations in temperature and humidity. Once the ground reference surface of the base suffers bumps, scratches, indentations or cracks, it will lose its metrology reference value upon arrival at overseas customers’ sites. Rework costs are extremely high, and in the worst cases, the whole product may be scrapped. Losses in many export projects do not stem from substandard factory precision, but inadequate packaging protection design. It comprehensively safeguards the precision granite reference surface through reference surface isolation, fixing methods, wooden crate structure, marine environmental protection and hoisting specifications.
The core principle for reference surface protection is no hard packaging materials shall be in direct contact with the ground surface. After finished products are completed, ZHHIMG® first cleans and removes dust from the reference surface. Special particle-free, low-fiber protective film fully wraps the entire precision ground area to prevent wood chips and sand grains from scratching the tabletop through friction during transit. Outside the film, elastic buffer cushions are laid. The cushions are soft and free of hard impurities to avoid direct pressure from crate edges and fasteners on the reference surface. All buffer materials are screened to exclude friable and mold-prone materials, preventing contaminants from adhering and penetrating under high humidity at sea and affecting cleanliness after customers unpack the goods. Hard corner protectors are separately installed on non-reference side surfaces and edges to resist impacts during hoisting and handling and avoid edge chipping.
Next is the support and limiting design inside the crate to prevent sliding and overturning of the base within the wooden box. Ordinary wooden crates simply place the stone inside. When the vessel sways, the base slides back and forth inside the box, and the reference surface is easily scraped against the crate. ZHHIMG® uses customized fumigated export wooden crates, with dedicated internal supporting tooling designed according to the base shape, weight and center of gravity. Support points avoid all precision reference areas, and forces are concentrated on the non-machined load-bearing zones of the base instead of applying pressure to the ground plane. Limit blocks are fitted inside the crate with controllable buffer gaps reserved in all directions. This restrains large displacement while preventing squeezing stress on granite caused by crate expansion and contraction from temperature and humidity changes. For heavy-duty bases, additional bottom load-bearing cross beams are added to distribute weight and prevent deformation and sagging of the crate baseboard, which would alter support stress.
The ocean shipping environment cannot be ignored; high humidity and salt spray are hidden threats. Even if physical collisions are avoided, prolonged damp conditions may lead to moldy packaging and contaminants sticking to the reference surface. ZHHIMG® places sufficient desiccants and moisture-proof bags inside the crate together with sealing film wrapping to lower relative humidity within the box and block intrusion of marine salt-laden moisture. Meanwhile, all wooden crates comply with export fumigation and quarantine standards to meet customs inspection requirements for wooden packaging in various countries. This avoids cargo detention and forced unpacking due to unqualified crate quarantine, which could cause unexpected damage during unpacking. Multi-language warning labels such as center-of-gravity marks, hoisting points, fragile marks, “Do Not Turn Over” and “Reference Surface Up” are affixed externally on each crate to guide standard operation by port and freight forwarder staff.
Hoisting and loading & unloading specifications are also an indispensable part of the protection chain. Granite is brittle. Improper lifting points or single-point hoisting can easily induce invisible internal microcracks, which will gradually expand during subsequent use and trigger precision anomalies. ZHHIMG® clearly marks permitted lifting points in packaging plans. Wrapping slings directly around the perimeter of reference surfaces is strictly prohibited. Heavy bases are preferentially hoisted as an integral pallet unit. The center of gravity is verified before hoisting to keep lifting stable and reduce shaking impact. After packaging is finished, photos and videos of the whole packing process are archived and delivered together with goods for overseas receivers to inspect. In case of abnormalities, responsibility can be quickly defined. 
Unpacking guidelines are also included in the complete delivery documents. Many damages occur not during sea transportation but due to improper unpacking operations on customers’ sites. ZHHIMG® supplies exclusive unpacking instructions with the container, reminding customers not to pry the crate with crowbars against the reference surface. It recommends removing packaging step by step and stripping buffer materials slowly. After unpacking, visual inspection shall be carried out first, followed by precision re-measurement to confirm the integrity of reference surfaces.
