When a machine has to hold its accuracy for years, the part underneath it decides how well it does. This custom granite machine component is cut from ZHHIMG® Black Granite, a dense, fine-grained stone that stays flat, calms vibration and shrugs off the temperature swings that make metal structures drift.

The piece shown here is a long box-section body with six large through-holes along its face, a stepped ledge with a row of precisely placed holes for rails and sensors, and square openings at the ends for drives and cabling. Every one of those features is machined to your drawing, so the component fits your machine instead of forcing your machine to fit the component.

What is a granite machine component used for?

It serves as the stable structure of a precision machine: a base, beam, column or gantry that carries guideways, motors and sensors. Builders of semiconductor tools, CMMs, laser machines and inspection systems use granite because it damps vibration and holds its geometry.

Why use granite instead of steel for a machine base?

Granite damps vibration much better, expands less with temperature and does not rust. Steel is tougher and easier to modify, so it suits shock loads. For precision positioning, granite usually performs better.

Can the component be customized with holes and inserts?

Yes. Through-holes, pockets, ledges and T-slots are machined to your drawing, and threaded features use bonded inserts, because granite should not be tapped directly.

How accurate can a precision granite component be?

It depends on the size, the stone and the finishing process. Micron-level flatness and parallelism are routine, and tighter tolerances are possible on request. Send your requirements and we will confirm what is achievable.
