Precision Granite Bridge Base for Coordinate Measuring Machines
A Structure Built to Hold Still
Every coordinate measuring machine is only as accurate as the frame it stands on. This is the part of the machine nobody talks about at trade shows — no servo motors, no sensors, nothing that lights up — and yet it's the single component that determines whether every other system on the CMM can actually deliver the accuracy printed on its spec sheet. That's what this bridge base is built for.
Machined from a solid block of dense black granite, this component forms the gantry-style bridge structure common to horizontal-arm and bridge-type CMMs: two vertical support columns rising from a wide base plate, connected by a horizontal top beam that carries the machine's moving bridge axis. The ribbed grooves running along the top beam aren't decorative — they're precision-ground guideway channels that the machine's linear motion system rides on, which means their straightness and parallelism have to hold within microns across the full length of the beam, not just at a few sample points.
What You're Actually Looking At
Looking at the part itself, the base plate carries a dense grid of threaded mounting holes running across its full surface — the pattern that lets integrators bolt down fixtures, workpiece clamps, or secondary measuring accessories anywhere on the table without needing a custom drilling job for every application. The two columns each have a large lightening bore through the center, which reduces mass without compromising the column's bending stiffness — a detail that matters more than it looks like it should, since every kilogram removed from a static structure is a kilogram the machine's temperature-control system doesn't have to stabilize.
The surface finish is a fine, consistent matte-black grind across every face — no polishing streaks, no visible tool marks, no color variation between sections, which is usually a reasonable visual indicator (though never a substitute for an actual calibration certificate) that the block was ground on a single well-maintained large-format surface grinder rather than assembled from mismatched stock. Mounted to the base plate in the reference image is a linear guide rail with a mounted probe head — shown here to illustrate how the finished granite structure integrates with the motion and sensing components a customer would add during machine assembly.
Why Granite Instead of Welded Steel
A welded or cast steel bridge frame is cheaper up front and faster to produce, but it comes with two problems that don't show up until the machine has been running for a while: internal welding stresses that relieve slowly over months and cause the frame to move slightly, and a thermal expansion rate roughly double that of dense granite. On a CMM measuring parts to single-digit-micron tolerances, either of those problems is enough to make the machine's accuracy spec meaningless within a year of installation. Granite doesn't have internal stress to relieve — it was already formed under natural geological pressure — and its lower, more stable coefficient of thermal expansion means the structure holds its geometry through normal daily temperature swings on a shop floor, not just inside a climate-controlled lab.

• Long-term dimensional stability. No internal casting or welding stress means the structure doesn't drift out of tolerance the way metal frames gradually do.
• Low thermal sensitivity. A lower CTE than steel or cast iron keeps the guideway geometry consistent across normal daily temperature variation, not just in a controlled lab environment.
• Vibration damping. The crystalline granite structure absorbs mechanical vibration more effectively than welded metal, which matters directly for probe settling time and measurement repeatability.
• Custom mounting flexibility. The full-surface hole grid lets integrators mount fixtures and accessories wherever the application requires, without a separate machining request for every layout change.
• Weight-optimized columns. Lightening bores reduce mass and thermal inertia while preserving the bending stiffness the bridge structure depends on.
• Verified flatness and calibration. Every unit is measured against recognized national standards, with a traceable certificate — not just a "precision ground" label with no documentation behind it.
We use various techniques during this process:
● Optical measurements with autocollimators
● Laser interferometers and laser trackers
● Electronic inclination levels (precision spirit levels)

Can the mounting hole pattern be customized for our existing CMM design? Yes. The hole grid, thread size, pitch, and insert type shown here are produced to customer drawings — this configuration is representative of a completed order rather than a fixed catalog item.
How is flatness verified before shipment? Every base plate and guideway surface is measured with a laser interferometer and electronic level against the relevant national standard (DIN 876, JIS B 7513, GB, or equivalent depending on destination market), with a calibration certificate issued and traceable to a national metrology institute.
What's the largest bridge structure you can produce as a single piece? Single-block components up to approximately 20 m in length, 4,000 mm in width, and 1,000 mm in thickness are within our processing capability. Larger assemblies are produced as bonded multi-piece structures engineered to maintain overall flatness and joint stability.
Do you supply the linear guide rail and probe head shown in the image, or only the granite structure? The granite bridge base is supplied as the structural component; the guide rail and probe assembly shown are included in the reference image to illustrate integration and can be sourced separately or coordinated with your existing motion system supplier.
What's the typical lead time for a custom bridge base? Lead time depends on overall dimensions, hole pattern complexity, and current production schedule — send your drawing or key dimensions and we'll confirm a specific timeline with your quote.
