Precision Granite Machine Base – Custom Black Granite

Q1. Is a granite machine base better than a cast iron one? It depends on the application. Granite offers better vibration damping, lower thermal expansion and no corrosion, which makes it a strong choice for metrology, laser and semiconductor equipment. Cast iron is stronger in tension and easier to cast into complex ribbed shapes. For many precision machines, the best design uses a granite base with a metal moving structure on top. Tell us about your machine and we will give you an honest recommendation.

Q2. How can I tell whether a granite base is real granite and not marble? Ask for the density and water-absorption test reports. Precision black granite is typically far denser than marble, and it is much less porous. ZHHIMG® black granite has a density of approx. 3100 kg/m³ [VERIFY], and we can supply test documentation on request.

Q3. How thick should a granite machine base be? There is no single answer. Thickness depends on span, load, support points and the stiffness your machine needs. As a starting point, many bases fall between 1/6 and 1/8 of their length, but we recommend a quick FEA-based review or engineering check for critical designs. Send us your layout and we will suggest a thickness.

Q4. What flatness can you achieve? It depends on the size and grade required. We can work to DIN 876 Grade 2, 1, 0 and 00 for suitable sizes [VERIFY]. Please tell us your target tolerance and measuring conditions, so we can confirm feasibility.

Q5. Can you add threaded inserts, T-slots and channels? Yes. We machine through-holes, blind holes, counterbores, slots, grooves and T-slots, and install stainless steel inserts to your specification.

Q6. Do you provide an inspection report? Yes. On request, we provide a flatness measurement report and a calibration certificate for the measuring instruments used, with traceability to national standards.

Q7. How do you pack and ship large granite parts? Each base is protected with shock-absorbing material and shipped in a reinforced wooden crate. We handle export documents and can arrange sea freight from the Qingdao port.

Q8. Can I order a single prototype? Yes, in most cases [VERIFY]. We are happy to support prototypes and then scale to production.

Q9. Can you also make bases from other materials? Yes. Besides granite, ZHHIMG® produces precision ceramic, precision metal, mineral casting, UHPC, carbon-fiber beams and precision glass components. If granite is not the best answer for your application, we will tell you.
