Why Granite Instead of Steel for This Job

Steel parallels are the traditional choice, and for good reason: they're tough, familiar, and inexpensive. But steel has two properties that work against it in precision applications — it expands and contracts measurably with temperature, and it can develop a slight magnetic field over time from repeated contact with machine tools and gauges, which is enough to throw off sensitive electronic measuring equipment.

Granite doesn't have either problem. Its coefficient of thermal expansion is roughly a third of most steels, so a granite parallel stays truer across a normal working-day temperature swing. It's completely non-magnetic, so it won't interfere with inductive probes or electronic gauges.
