Precision Granite Parallel Bars & Straight Rulers
There's a moment every machinist and quality inspector knows well: you set a part on what's supposed to be a flat, parallel reference, and the readings don't quite make sense. Nine times out of ten, the problem isn't the part — it's the reference surface underneath it. That's the exact problem granite parallel bars and straight rulers are built to eliminate.
ZHHIMG's granite parallel bars are precision-ground black granite blocks, machined so that the top and bottom faces are flat and parallel to each other within tight, verifiable tolerances, and the side faces are square to both. They're used as a physical reference — under gauges, under workpieces, alongside height stands, or as a straightedge check against a machined surface — anywhere a measurement is only as good as what it's sitting on.
Why Granite Instead of Steel for This Job
Steel parallels are the traditional choice, and for good reason: they're tough, familiar, and inexpensive. But steel has two properties that work against it in precision applications — it expands and contracts measurably with temperature, and it can develop a slight magnetic field over time from repeated contact with machine tools and gauges, which is enough to throw off sensitive electronic measuring equipment.
Granite doesn't have either problem. Its coefficient of thermal expansion is roughly a third of most steels, so a granite parallel stays truer across a normal working-day temperature swing. It's completely non-magnetic, so it won't interfere with inductive probes or electronic gauges. And because there's no internal casting or rolling stress to relax over time the way there is in worked metal, a granite parallel that's flat today tends to stay flat years from now — which matters if this bar is going to anchor calibration checks for the life of your equipment.

- • Thermally stable — low, predictable expansion means the bar holds its calibrated dimensions across normal workshop temperature swings, not just at a single reference temperature.
- • Non-magnetic — safe to use directly alongside electronic and inductive measuring instruments without introducing interference.
- • Corrosion-resistant — unlike steel, granite doesn't rust, pit, or require oiling between uses, which matters in humid environments or facilities without dedicated tool storage.
- • Long-term dimensional stability — no internal stress relief drift over time, so recalibration intervals can often be extended compared to worked-metal parallels.
- • Two finish options — a matte-ground surface for standard shop use, or a high-polish finish where surface reflectivity or aesthetic presentation matters (display standards, cleanroom-adjacent equipment).
- • Custom sizing available — produced to standard catalog lengths or machined to a customer-specified length and cross-section.
We use various techniques during this process:
● Optical measurements with autocollimators
● Laser interferometers and laser trackers
● Electronic inclination levels (precision spirit levels)

How accurate is a granite parallel bar compared to a steel one? Both can be manufactured to tight tolerances initially. The real difference shows up over time and across temperature: granite tends to hold its original flatness and parallelism longer, since it isn't subject to the same stress-relief drift or thermal swing sensitivity that affects worked steel.
Can granite parallels be used with magnetic V-blocks or magnetic bases? Yes — since granite itself is non-magnetic, it won't interfere with a magnetic fixture placed on or near it, unlike a steel parallel, which can develop residual magnetism that affects nearby sensitive instruments.
Do granite parallels need special handling or storage? They should be handled the way any precision reference tool is — avoid dropping or impact loading on the edges, since granite is harder but more brittle than steel and can chip on a sharp corner strike. Otherwise, they require no oiling, rust prevention, or special storage conditions.
Can you match a specific tolerance grade or standard? Yes. We manufacture and calibrate to DIN, ASME, JIS, and GB tolerance grades depending on the application, with calibration certificates traceable to a national metrology institute.
What sizes are available? We produce both standard catalog sizes and custom lengths and cross-sections, including larger single-piece bars for applications that require a longer continuous reference than typical off-the-shelf parallels provide.
