ZHHIMG® Precision Granite Square Ruler with Protective Carrying Case

Short Description:

A machine can have highly accurate linear scales, precision guideways and advanced control software, yet a small squareness error between two axes can still affect the final result.

That is where a precision square becomes useful.

A granite square provides a physical geometric reference against which a machine axis, fixture, workpiece or structural component can be inspected. Combined with a calibrated dial indicator or other suitable metrology equipment, it can be used to identify deviations from the intended 90° relationship.

Product Features

High-Density ZHHIMG® Black Granite

The square ruler is manufactured from ZHHIMG® Black Granite, with a density of approximately 3100 kg/m³.

The material provides a combination of rigidity, dimensional stability, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and vibration-damping characteristics that makes granite suitable for precision metrology.

Unlike ordinary stone products or low-cost marble substitutes, ZHHIMG® selects and processes granite specifically for precision engineering applications.

Precision 90° Reference

The primary purpose of a granite square ruler is to establish a highly stable angular reference.

Depending on its configuration and specified accuracy grade, it can be used to inspect:

  • •  Squareness
  • •  Perpendicularity
  • •  Machine-axis alignment
  • •  Workpiece geometry
  • •  Fixture alignment
  • •  Guideway alignment
  • •  Assembly accuracy
  • •  CMM-related geometric references

Precision granite squares are commonly used for checking the relationship between nominally perpendicular machine axes and reference surfaces.

Precision-Machined and Hand-Lapped Surfaces

The working surfaces are produced through controlled machining, precision grinding and, where required, hand lapping.

ZHHIMG® combines modern large-format grinding equipment with experienced precision lapping technicians. Experienced technicians in the company have more than 30 years of hands-on lapping experience.

For precision measurement, the final surface condition is not simply a cosmetic requirement. Flatness, straightness, squareness and surface quality directly affect the reliability of the measurement reference.

Four Circular Lightening / Handling Holes

The product shown features four circular openings distributed across the granite body.

These openings reduce unnecessary mass while providing practical handling advantages without compromising the intended reference structure when properly engineered.

The exact hole configuration, dimensions and structural geometry can be customized according to the product size and customer's requirements.

Protective Aluminum Carrying Case

Precision measuring tools should not be treated like ordinary machine accessories.

The granite square is supplied with a dedicated protective carrying case designed to make transportation and storage safer. The case shown includes:

  • •  Rigid aluminum-style exterior
  • •  Protective internal cushioning
  • •  Metal latches
  • •  Carrying handle
  • •  Dedicated internal support for the granite square

For customers moving precision inspection equipment between production areas, laboratories or machine installations, protective packaging helps reduce the risk of accidental impact during handling.

Why Granite Is Used for Precision Squares

A precision square is only useful when its own geometry is sufficiently stable.

Granite offers several characteristics that are valuable in this role.

Dimensional Stability

Granite is naturally stable and does not readily deform under normal working conditions. This makes it suitable for precision reference tools where geometry must remain consistent over time.

Corrosion Resistance

Unlike steel squares, granite does not rust. This reduces concerns about corrosion-related surface damage in normal laboratory and manufacturing environments.

Non-Magnetic Characteristics

Granite is non-metallic and does not introduce the magnetic behavior associated with ferromagnetic steel components.

Wear Resistance

Properly finished granite measuring surfaces can provide long service life when handled and maintained correctly.

Vibration Damping

The material's damping characteristics can help reduce the influence of mechanical vibration in sensitive measurement environments.

The objective is not to claim that granite makes a measurement automatically accurate. The real advantage is that it provides a stable, repeatable physical reference when correctly manufactured, calibrated and used.

Quality Control

We use various techniques during this process:

●  Optical measurements with autocollimators

●  Laser interferometers and laser trackers

●  Electronic inclination levels (precision spirit levels)

FAQ

What is a granite square ruler?

A granite square ruler is a precision measuring tool manufactured from granite and designed to provide a stable geometric reference for checking squareness, perpendicularity and alignment.

It is commonly used in metrology, machine-tool inspection, precision assembly and calibration.

What is a granite square used for?

A granite square can be used to inspect the squareness of machine axes, workpieces, fixtures and structural components. It can also be used as a reference during precision assembly and alignment.

What is DIN 875?

DIN 875 is a German standard associated with precision squares and their geometric accuracy requirements. The appropriate grade and tolerance depend on the specific product size and configuration.

ZHHIMG® offers granite square rulers designed according to DIN 875 requirements and can provide customized specifications.

What accuracy can a ZHHIMG® granite square achieve?

ZHHIMG® currently lists precision granite square rulers in high-accuracy configurations, including 0.001 mm accuracy class and Grade 000/00 options. However, the achievable tolerance depends on the square's dimensions, geometry, selected grade and inspection requirements.

Can the granite square be customized?

Yes.

ZHHIMG® can customize dimensions, thickness, working surfaces, holes, carrying case configuration and other requirements according to the customer's application and engineering drawing.

Can I order a granite square with a calibration certificate?

Yes. Calibration and inspection documentation can be supplied according to the required specification and project requirements.

How should a granite square be handled?

The precision surfaces and edges should be protected from impact. The square should be transported using appropriate packaging or its dedicated carrying case and stored in a clean, stable environment.

Avoid dropping, dragging or striking the granite against metal surfaces.

Can a granite square be used for CMM inspection?

Yes. Precision granite squares can be used as geometric references in CMM-related inspection and machine alignment applications, provided that the square's accuracy and calibration are appropriate for the measurement task.

Can a granite square be used for semiconductor equipment?

Yes. Its dimensional stability, non-metallic nature and precision-machined reference surfaces make granite suitable for selected semiconductor equipment alignment and inspection applications. ZHHIMG® specifically lists semiconductor alignment among the applications for its precision granite square ruler.
